The Walking Dead main show might be ending after season 11 but AMC just announced a new spin off Walking Dead show. This brings the spinoffs to 4: Fear the Walking Dead, World Beyond, Daryl and Carol, and now Tales of the Walking Dead. Tales of the Walking Dead is an episodic anthology series will debut in summer of next year. The one-hour episodes that are featuring both new and existing characters will be streamed on AMC and AMC Plus. The first season is only slated for six episodes. This means that any character that has been on any Walking Dead show is in play for this show. We will get six standalone episodes for the first season, highlighting one character each episode. Channing Powell, who has worked as a writer and producer on both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, serves as the showrunner. for this show. Powell will work alongside Scott M. Gimple, the chief content officer of The Walking Dead universe.
Dan McDermott who serves as the president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios said that, "We see so much potential for a wide range of rich and compelling storytelling in this world, and the episodic anthology format of Tales of the Walking Dead will give us the flexibility to entertain existing fans and also offer an entry point for new viewers, especially on streaming platforms. We have seen the appeal of this format in television classics like The Twilight Zone and more recently, Black Mirror and are excited to engage with fans in this new way, against the backdrop of this very unique and engrossing world." Scott Gimple also said, “This series, more than any other in the Walking Dead Universe, runs on new voices, perspectives, and ideas — bringing to life stories unlike any we've told before.”
With all that being said, I have high hopes for this show. Any character is in play in the Walking Dead universe. I believe that this is going to be a test run for certain characters to have a standalone spinoffs in the future (like Carol & Daryl already has) or can work into a movie role (like Rick Grimes currently has). I believe the character that is the most primed for this spot is Negan. Negan has became one of the most liked characters in the show and his character has done a complete 180. Jeffery Dean Morgan (Negan) already has movie role experience so I am predicting that he will get a standalone movie in the future. This could also bring us characters that were never on the show but we all knew from the comic book. One character could be Rick Grimes’ brother, Jeffrey. If you are a show only fan you must be thinking, “Wait, Rick has a brother.” He sure does! Characters like that could have the spot light for one episode in this series. If this series is a hit with the fans, I am sure that AMC will green light more Walking Dead spinoff shows in the future and continue to make more seasons of this one. Even though the “main show” is ending, Walking Dead fans will still have content for years to come because The Walking Dead is never going to end…
