The Buffalo Bills won their third consecutive AFC East title, and registered their fourth consecutive season with double digit wins. However, the Bills failed to make it to the Super Bowl, losing to the Bengals in the Divisional Round. The Bills failure in the playoffs is becoming a trend, and it’s a cause for concern as they head into 2023. Can this group get it done? The Miami Dolphins made their first playoff appearance since 2016. Miami’s dynamic receivers helped get QB Tua Tagovailoa on the right path, along with head coach Mike McDaniel. Tua’s season ultimately concluded after a concussion, and the Dolphins season ended in the Wildcard round of the playoffs. The New England Patriots took a step back in 2022. The departure of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was truly significant loss for the Patriots, as Matt Patricia and Joe Judge never were able to figure things out offensively. But, after hiring Bill O’Brien as the team’s new offensive coordinator, will they be able to get the offense back on track? The New York Jets showed some growth, but were hampered by the quarterback position. Zach Wilson and Mike White weren’t good enough and the team suffered because of it. But, the Jets may have a new quarterback incoming. The AFC East is improving, so what will in store for 2023?
Read moreIn 2022, the NFC East may have been the best division in football. The Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Giants all punched their ticket to the playoffs. The Eagles went 14-3, before falling to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. But, this season was certainly a success for the Eagles, as they officially established that Jalen Hurts was their quarterback of the future. Hurts was an MVP candidate, willing the Eagles to one of the league’s best offenses. The Cowboys were able to overcome QB Dak Prescott’s thumb injury early in the season, which sidelined him for about a month. The Cowboys were able to win a playoff game, as they beat Tom Brady’s Bucs on the road. But, they fell short in the Divisional round of the playoffs, losing to the 49ers (again). The Giants may have been the biggest surprise of the 2022 season. The Giants finished with a winning record for the first time since 2016, and won their first playoff game since 2011. Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll was able to get the offense on track, and QB Daniel Jones registered a career season. The arrow is pointing up for the Giants as they head into the 2023 season. The Washington Commanders represented the basement of the NFC East, as they were the lone team in that division to not make the playoffs. The Carson Wentz experiment at quarterback lasted for seven starts, but they were still able to go 8-8-1. QB Taylor Henicke kept them afloat, but their playoff hopes fell short for the second consecutive season. The teams in the NFC East combined for a record of 43-23-2. The 2022 season was a wild ride in the NFC East, will 2023 live up to the hype?
Read moreThe Minnesota Vikings won their first NFC North title since 2017. in 2022 The Vikings went 13-4 before getting bounced out in the first-round of the playoffs by the Giants. While their regular season performance was certainly impressive, it was a disappointment to get booted out so quickly in the playoffs. The Detroit Lions entered the season as everyone’s sleeper pick to go on a run in the NFC. To me, it felt like a lot of it stemmed from Detroit’s excellent appearance on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” last Summer. The Lions struggled out of the gate, with a defense playing beyond poorly. But, Jared Goff and the Lions offense rallied the team down the stretch to their first winning record since 2017 (9-8). While, the arrow is seemingly pointing in the right direction for the Lions, the Green Bay Packers have a question mark at the most important position in football. To this moment, it’s unclear whether QB Aaron Rodgers will return, or if fourth-year QB Jordan Love will get the keys to the castle. The 2022 Packers dealt with injuries on both sides of the ball, but both their offense and defense underachieved. The Packers finished the season with an 8-9 record, after three consecutive 13 win seasons. The Chicago Bears finished 2022 on a 10 game losing streak, clinching the first-overall pick of the NFL Draft. However, the Bears traded that pick to the Panthers for the 9th pick, the 61st pick, a 2024 first-round pick, a 2025-second round pick, and WR DJ Moore. This division could go in a number of different ways come 2023.
Read moreIn 2022, the Cincinnati Bengals won their second consecutive AFC North title. They were the clear class of that division, winning eight consecutive games to end the regular season and 10 overall, before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game. The Baltimore Ravens struggled to remain healthy in 2022, QB Lamar Jackson missed the last six games of the season. Jackson’s future is the lead AFC North storyline, and may even be the biggest storyline in the NFL this Spring. Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers were somehow able to register another season with a winning record, doing so behind rookie QB Kenny Pickett. It didn’t take the Steelers long to get the quarterback situation figured out. The Cleveland Browns found themselves at the bottom of the AFC North. QB Deshaun Watson missed the first 11 games of the season with his suspension. But, once Watson returned he did not look like himself. Will he be able to get back on track in 2023? The AFC North is set up to be one of the most exciting divisions in football.
Read moreIn 2022, the NFC South was the weakest division in the NFL. The division winner was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who sported a losing record (8-9). The New Orleans Saints also struggled to meet expectations, finishing their season well below .500 at 7-10.The Carolina Panthers were sellers at the trade deadline, moving a franchise cornerstone in RB Christian McCaffrey, along with firing Head Coach Matt Rhule after five games. With all that going on, the Panthers still found themselves within a game of the NFC South crown heading into Week 18. The Atlanta Falcons took a step in the right direction, but still have some major question marks going forward, especially at the quarterback position. This division is truly wide open in 2023.It’s realistic that every team in this division could have a new quarterback in 2023.
Read moreThe Jacksonville Jaguars won the AFC South in 2022, and a big reason why was due to the fantastic bounce-back season from QB Trevor Lawrence. It was clear that Lawrence needed some quality coaching after an ugly rookie campaign, and head coach Doug Pederson provided that. The Tennessee Titans dealt with injuries on both sides of the ball, but it was clear that their roster had aged, leading to some big questions going forward. The Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans are both in similar spots, as they both hired new head coaches this offseason, and both could be in the market for a QB in the NFL Draft.
Read moreMost experts were wrong about how the NFC West would unfold in 2022. Many expected the Russell Wilson-less Seattle Seahawks to crater and be in the conversation for the league’s worst record. But, the Seahawks finished the season with a winning record and made the playoffs with Geno Smith under center. On the other side of the coin, the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams cratered, finishing with a 5-12 record after multiple injuries on both sides of the ball. The Arizona Cardinals also underachieved, leading to a head coaching change. The San Francisco 49ers went through three quarterbacks and still found themselves in the NFC Championship game for the second consecutive season.
Read moreThe AFC West was one of the most fascinating divisions to watch unfold in 2022. The expectations for the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders, and Denver Broncos were all very high. While, the Chiefs cashed in on their second Super Bowl title in four seasons, the Broncos and Raiders underperformed leading to some major changes heading into 2023. The 2022 Chargers had some highs and lows, but ultimately had their season end with a blown 27-point lead in the playoffs.
