With the Reds selecting right-hander Chase Burns No. 2 overall in the draft, it caused quite the shakeup and many players ended up bouncing around in different slots than most had expected. The Mets were able to take full advantage of that by selecting Oklahoma State University outfielder Carson Benge No. 19. Later in the second round, the Mets selected left-hander Jonathan Santucci No. 46 overall out of Duke.

Unlike last year’s draft which saw Paul Skenes go No. 1 overall to the Pirates, there isn’t an arm this time around who deserves to go first. Southpaw Hagen Smith out of Arkansas, and Wake Forest right-hander Chase Burns are the only two pitchers most see going in the top 10. The Cardinals at No. 7 would be the best bet to take either of them, with John Mozeliak and company loving to take arms in the early rounds of the draft.

It’s been quite the season thus far with lots of surprises, and a few major disappointments 50-games in. Big Nate is here to breakdown all of the major news to start off the season so far, along with my predictions nearly a 1/3 of the way into the 2022 MLB season. Seen as next to impossible when news broke Sunday morning that the Mets were “kicking the tires” on RHP Max Scherzer, my plane touched down in Denver at 9:13AM my time. My phone began to erupt with Tweet notifications regarding the Mets and Scherzer, and I believed that there was a strong possibility of the sides reaching an agreement. Flashback to Wednesday when Mets owner Steve Cohen took to Twitter to share his anger regarding Steven Matz and his agent not giving the Mets a chance to up their offer to him, reports began to swirl that the club wasn’t seen as a destination for some big name players and that they didn’t want to come here.

The Mets made three impact moves on Friday by signing INF Eduardo Escobar, OF/1B Mark Canha, and CF Starling Marte. After weeks of scrutiny for not doing anything, in an already relatively slow offseason ahead of a potential lockout starting on Monday, the Mets invested $124.5M on three offensive players. This was also days after Mets owner/CEO Steve Cohen took to Twitter to ridicule Steven Matz’s agent after he didn’t give the Mets a chance to top St. Louis’ offer on the starting pitcher. AND after ESPN’s Buster Olney put out a puffed piece editorial on how players an agents might, “resent Cohen” for his Tweet.
