Another Star Wars series on Disney+ has come and gone, this time it was The Acolyte. The show had been highly anticipated since its announcement back in 2020 when showrunner/series creator Leslye Headland said it would be unlike anything we’ve seen before, being about the Sith. Critics seemed to enjoy the show, while fans were pretty divisive with their opinions on the series. I for one enjoyed it a lot, and found the newfound originality pretty fun. In a galaxy with so much to play with, everything when it comes to their shows and movies seem to revolve around the same looming villain in the Empire, takes place in the same 50-year timeframe and involves a Skywalker. Beating a dead horse is something that Lucasfilm and Disney doesn’t seem to understand, but Headland go the memo.
That being said, seeing these shows through Disney and one movie in Rogue One has been amazing, but the same plot being redone in the films, characters being recycled, and eras being the same, has become pretty old of late. The mystery to this show and not having a clear, or really any, knowledge on what is coming next was a VERY nice change of pace. Yes, nothing is ever perfect, and this show definitely has its issues. Pacing was a little off, certain episodes should’ve been combined, some characters didn’t get enough screen time/character development, but at the end of the day, what I look for is a great story, and this overarching story was pretty consistent in being a fun ride from start to finish.
From the start we see an assassination of a Jedi, plated by Carrie-Anne Moss, which kickstarted the murders of three Jedi at the hands of Mae, he “sister” of Osha and fellow Force user. Again, a murder mystery within the world of Star Wars? That’s a storyline I never knew I wanted, as a lover of British Mysteries and Detective dramas.
