Maggie and Negan are slated to star in their own Walking Dead spinoff show in 2023. AMC green lit the six episode spinoff show on March 7th. This is the franchises 5th spinoff show: “Fear the Walking Dead”, “World Beyond”, “The Daryl and Carol Spinoff Show”, “Tales of The Walking Dead”, and now, “Isle of the Dead”. “Isle of the Dead” is set in Manhattan and follow Negan and Maggie exploring a post-apocalyptic New York City. The future of The Walking Dead is bright because even though the main show is ending, they still have spinoff shows in their back pocket and I fully expect more to be announced soon. AMC also has the Rick Grimes movies too, whenever they decide to come out. The unlikeliest duo of the show will be together again for a little longer after the main show ends at the end of 2022.
Lauren Cohan and Jeffery Dean Morgan are slated to star in their show and serve as executive producers. Longtime TWD writer Eli Jorné will serve as showrunner on the drama. The series will also be overseen by TWD Universe content chief Scott M. Gimple. Maggie has been around since season 2 and Negan has been around since season 7. Maggie and Negan are fan favorites in The Walking Dead universe. Even though Maggie has been bugging people throughout season 11, being more of a dictator than a leader and always having a target on Negan’s back, fans have loved her from the beginning. Negan on the other hand is a whole different story. If you want to see one of the greatest character transformations ever, take notes from Jeffery Dean Morgan. Once the most hated character from killing Glenn and Abraham, is one of the most loved characters in season 11. He definitely is in my top 3 characters of all time and if we get more screen time from Negan, this show will be a win in my book.
Isle of the Dead will be the most compelling story out of the spinoff shows, since the on going history with the two beloved characters. Maggie and Negan are going to have to settle their differences in the back half of season 11 and ride off the NYC. However, this makes me wonder that all these spinoff shows are an indication where the Rick Grimes movies are headed. I think the Rick Grimes movies are going to be in the same timeline as all of the time skips since he has been gone (9 and a half years) and the concluding episodes in season 11. I did see Maggie and or Negan to appear in the Rick Grimes movies but with them going to NYC, I don’t see that lining up. Especially when Daryl and Carol are going to leave for their own spinoff show. This makes me believe that Daryl won’t leave for Rick, instead to find Leah. I was disappointed that AMC didn’t wait to announce this show until the main ended because there is another two characters that are safe all the way to the end. It ruins the shock value that AMC once had for this show. I really thought that Maggie was in danger of being the last person killed in season 11 for the shock value alone. I have no idea who it will be to take the ending death of the show but it has to be big. If I had to put any money on it right now, I am now going with Aaron. I’m glad that The Walking Dead is not truly going to die after the main show ends at the end of this year. I am loving season 11 and when it finally hits me that the show ends, a part of me is going to be broken. Even with them filming the last episode as I write this gets me a little emotional. However, the future of The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead universe will be around for a long time with the various spinoff shows they have, the Rick Grimes movies, and whatever spinoff shows they decide to come up with. It is only a matter of time before they announce the Judith Grimes spinoff show to continue the Grimes legacy. Throw away less is more for this show because as I see it, the more Walking Dead content that we get, the better it is more fans and AMC in the long run. AMC should continue to milk their cash cow until they can’t get anything else out of it.
