The Rick Grimes movies are cancelled. Womp womp… After Rick Grimes departure of the show in season 9, it was announced in 2019 that he would star in his own trilogy and Michonne would join him in those movies after her departure after season 10. But after crickets of no news about this movie, AMC dropped a bomb shell at this years San Diego Comic Con. Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) and Danai Gurira (Michonne) returned at the end of The Walking Dead panel to announce their own spinoff coming in 2023 on AMC and AMC+. This spinoff show will be six episodes long and potentially leaving the door open for this being more than a mini-series. This will tie up loose ends with both characters, giving them a proper send off the fans deserve. Even though I am disappointed that a Rick Grimes movie will not happen in theaters, I will take a six hours of Rick Grimes content over a two hour movie, and bring the beloved character back to the AMC screen.
There is no current title for this spinoff show as of now but the official description of this show reads, “Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead... And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they've ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead.” This will certainly be an action packed show with some romance between the two stars of The Walking Dead on the side. Can we talk for a second about how good the poster for this show looks. The map that Abraham gave Rick in season 5 on top of Michonne’s iconic katana. This poster is almost perfect and I can’t wait for more updates and promos for this show. However, Walking Dead fans will have to wait a little longer until we see the two reunite. I do believe we will get this show at the end of 2023, probably in October or November, at the earliest. I think after the main show ends in December, we will get a date for season 8 of Fear of The Walking Dead, then its Lauren Cohan’s (Maggie) and Jeffery Dean Morgan’s (Negan) spinoff show, Isle of The Walking Dead, since it is filming as I write this article, then I believe we will get Daryl’s spinoff show before we get this one.
We haven’t seen Rick Grimes since season 9 when he was flown away by a helicopter with Jadis to the CRM in an unknown location. We also haven’t seen Michonne since season 10 when she left to show because she found that Rick Grimes was alive from Virgil’s boat. I believe that this show will begin with two different storylines between Rick, waking up from his coma on the helicopter and trying to get back to Alexandra but not being able to, and Michonne trying to break into the CRM wherever Rick is held up. However, by the middle of the show (episode 3 or 4), we will get that reunion we have been asking for since Michonne left the show, with Rick and Michonne kicking ass and killing anyone that gets in their way. I wonder if any other person will be on this spinoff show with Rick and Michonne. I am guessing no, expect for Jadis, but there is a possibility of Judith, RJ, or Virgil making an appearance on the show. A part of me wants Daryl to return for the series finale of this show because like every other Walking Dead fan, a part of me won’t be complete until we get the iconic Rick and Daryl bromance hug. I hope Daryl’s spinoff show in Europe will lead him to this show by getting more clues about Rick’s disappearance, meets up with Michonne, and they can close the book on The Walking Dead once and for all. There is a little hope that Andrew Lincoln and/or Danai Gurira will return in the series finale of The Walking Dead in a post credit scene, a flashback, or the ending scene. The Walking Dead isn’t TWD without Rick Grimes. We started with his story and it is only right that we end with him too. His absence will all be forgiven if we get one final scene with Rick Grimes in the series finale of the show…
