The latest episode of WandaVision continued the explosiveness that has seemingly never ended since episode 3. This episode seemed to take place during modern times, as episode 6 took place in the mid-2000s. We saw multiple scenes of Wanda, Vision, Darcy and “Agnes” speaking to the camera in like a Modern Family and The Office-styled documentary scene. The episode, Breaking The Fourth Wall, was all about fourth wall breaking and getting that from someone other than Deadpool was nice for a change. Something tells me that we’ll be seeing more of that in the future of the MCU as well.
What really isn’t getting enough excitement, due to the ending being so crazy, is Monica Rambeau’s superhero origin. Once the aerospace vehicle that Monica’s unknown friend who is promised to be someone of note, was rendered underivable thanks to the Hex, Monica shockingly walked into the Hex. In the prior episode Darcy told Monica that her being in and out of the Hex multiple times had caused her DNA to alter, so we knew that something would happen once she ventured there again. Lo and behold Darcy was right as Monica seemed to be altered once she reentered Westview.
Monica’s eyes quickly began to glow, while also turning blue, as she saw Westview as a Rick And Morty-like psychedelic trip. Later on when confronting Wanda turned out to be a mistake, Monica displayed some form of superhuman strength as she was able to fight off Wanda’s “magic push.” Blue energy formed around her as she did a superhero landing, and the two of them looked rather confused. Monica will be appearing in the currently untitled Captain Marvel sequel, in what will most likely be a team-up. Back in episode 4 it was revealed that Monica’s mother had the nickname Photon. That is a callback to Monica’s most popular superhero alias of the same name. So I’m guessing she’ll take on the name as a namesake to her deceased mother.
Remember when Vision was at work back in episode 5 and Norm temporarily had his memories restored by Vision? Norm seemed frightened by a nameless character that he was referring to as “her.” Many assumed it to be Wanda, as did Vision. Well, we now might be able to rule her out.
What really seemed to be the talk of the episode, and rightfully so, was Agnes. Or as I should call her, Agatha Harkness. It is revealed that Agnes has been pulling the strings all along, and is seemingly the main villain of the inaugural season. In the comics Agatha is a fellow sorceress, who is actually a friend and mentor to Wanda. So her being the villain, is an interesting route to go down. While Agatha could be under the power of the Hex and might turn out to be an ally to Wanda at some point, I don’t believe that to be the case.
In the final moments of the episode we see Wanda making her way down to Agatha’s dungeon that has been underneath her house all along, and see a glowing book. This book is most likely the Darkhold, also known as the Book of Spells, which also happens to be the most powerful book in all of Marvel. The book is made up of dark matter, which comes from Dormammu’s Dark Dimension. The Darkhold is most commonly used to create monsters such as Werewolves, Vampires, Zombies, and anything scary that you can think of. So I don’t think Agatha would be in possession of such an object without having control over what she was doing.
WandaVision will directly tie into Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, and you bet Strange will want to get ahold of the Darkhold to keep it out of harms way. The Darkold could also tie-into Disney+’s Moon Knight series as well as Mahersha Ali’s Blade movie. Maybe Agatha or someone else will use the book to create Vampires, and Eric Brooks will get his Blade powers? Maybe it will also create Werewolves and that’s how the rumored Werewolf By Night will come into play for the Moon Knight series? There are many possibilities with this fascinating book making its MCU debut.
What was also revealed in this episode, is that Evan Peters’ Pietro is indeed an imposter. I still think he could be Mephisto, but he could be Nicholas Scratch whose Agatha’s son in the comics whose also another sorcerer.
The advertisement for this week’s episode was probably one of my favorite Easter Eggs of the series to date, which also unleashed the multiverse in the MCU. It also helps to set up the Loki series which is set to air on Disney+ later this year. In the comics, the Nexus is a cross-dimensional gateway which provides a pathway to any possible reality in the multiverse. Each reality has a Nexus “commander”, and Wanda was one of them. These beings are monitored by the Time Variance Authority, who will appear in Loki. Owen Wilson’s Mobius M. Mobius is a high ranking member of the Time Variance Authority.
The Nexus is basically a gateway to the multiverse, where you can travel at ease and essentially do whatever you want without any consequences. So while I still believe that “Pietro” is a villain in disguise, seeing Agatha controlling him could mean that he is who he says he is, just that he’s being mind controlled.
Episode 7 furthermore cements the plot of the season, and gives us our first reveal of the main villain, who’s seemingly been pulling the strings from the start. With only two episodes remaining this season, we’re bound for more twists and turns. Especially if the aerospace engineer turns out to be none other than Hank McCoy or Reed Richards.
