It’s Mock Draft season!
Jason Pombo, Brandon Carr, and Nate Olshan release their one and only NFL Mock Draft.
Jason Pombo 1.0
1. Jacksonville Jaguars: QB Trevor Lawrence Clemson
This pick has been locked and sealed since the Jaguars clinched the first-overall pick. The only reason why Urban Meyer agreed to come out of retirement was to coach Lawrence. He’s that special of a player, and the Jaguars have a real chance to build something. The Jaguars have had a losing record in eight of their last nine seasons, and all eyes will be on Lawrence and Meyer to change that.
2. New York Jets: QB Zach Wilson BYU
After the Jets elected to trade Sam Darnold, the decision became clear that they would be looking to draft a quarterback. BYU’s Zach Wilson has truly skyrocketed up draft boards, and it seems like a virtual certainty that he’ll be the Jets selection. Wilson got on the map after his 2020 campaign, as he had 33 touchdown passes, to only three interceptions, with a completion percentage of 73.5%. Wilson’s upside is impossible to deny, and the Jets land their quarterback of the future.
3. San Francisco 49ers: QB Mac Jones Alabama
This pick will certainly turn some heads when it’s official, but Alabama’s Mac Jones seems to be the quarterback that Kyle Shanahan has fallen in love with. Jones’ accuracy, decision-making, and quick release make him a perfect fit for Kyle Shanahan’s offense. He might not be the most athletic quarterback left on the board, but he fits what the 49ers do.
4. Atlanta Falcons: TE Kyle Pitts Florida
The Falcons really control the draft board with this pick. They can do a multitude of things, including, taking a quarterback, trading down, or, taking tight end phenome, Kyle Pitts. I think ultimately, they take Pitts, giving Matt Ryan the best skill-position player in this draft. New Falcons coach Arthur Smith seems set on sticking with Matt Ryan, and if that’s the case, surrounding him with talent is the best move. Kyle Pitts is probably one of the safest picks in this draft. His versatility and red zone presence will propel Atlanta to a new level on offense.
5. Cincinnati Bengals: OT Penei Sewell Oregon
During his rookie campaign, Joe Burrow got sacked 32 times in 10 games. Protecting Burrow should be a priority for the Bengals, as he will be coming off of a torn ACL. The Bengals certainly could look to add a receiver here, but with the best offensive tackle on the board, the Bengals would be foolish to continue to ignore their holes on the offensive line. Peter King of NBC Sports spoke with an anonymous coach, and this anonymous coach believes that, “If I could pick one player in this draft who’s got the best chance to go to the Hall of Fame, it’s Penei Sewell.”
6. Miami Dolphins: WR Ja’Marr Chase LSU
The Dolphins fell short of the playoffs in 2020, and surrounding Tua Tagovailoa with playmakers could give them the best possible chance to reach the postseason. Despite adding Will Fuller IV in the offseason, I think the Dolphins take the best receiver in the draft here, Ja’Marr Chase. Even after sitting out the 2020 season, Chase still finds himself headlining the receiver position. It’s tough to forget his dynamic 2019 season in which he secured 20 touchdown receptions on route to a National Championship. Between DeVante Parker, Will Fuller IV, Preston Williams, Mike Gesicki, and now Ja’Marr Chase, the Dolphins will be a handful for opposing secondary’s. It’s all on Tua Tagovailoa’s shoulders now.
7. Denver Broncos: QB Justin Fields Ohio State (TRADE)
Despite the fact that the acquired Teddy Bridgewater, I have the Denver Broncos trading up two spots to acquire their franchise quarterback. At one point, Justin Fields was widely considered to be the second-quarterback of the class. But, Fields’ stock has taken a hit, and the Broncos are able to successfully land him at seven. Fields is as talented as anyone, and his arm strength is arguably the best in the class. Drew Lock, and Bridgewater aren’t the answer in Denver, and trading up for Fields here makes all the sense in the world. The upside on Fields is too good to pass up on.
8. Washington Football Team: QB Trey Lance North Dakota State (TRADE)
The Panthers seem determined to trade down, and they receive a massive draft haul to do so. I have the Washington Football Team shooting up the draft board to take take Trey Lance. Despite the fact, that the Washington Football Team signed Ryan Fitzpatrick and resigned Taylor Heinicke in the offseason, a trade up for Lance is certainly plausible. Heinicke and Fitzpatrick clearly aren’t long-term answers, and the Washington Football Team reportedly, “loves” Trey Lance. According to Michael Lombardi of the GM Shuffle Podcast, “I think they love Lance. I don't think, I know Washington loves Lance.” Fitzpatrick will likely get the nod to start the 2021 season, and he would be the perfect bridge to Lance, whenever he’s ready.
9. Detroit Lions: LB Micah Parsons Penn State
After the Lions moved down a few spots, they still get the player they wanted all a long. I know a lot of people are penciling the Lions in for a wide receiver, but to me, they need help on defense more then anything else. In 2020, the Lions allowed an average of 32.4 points per game on defense, which was the worst in the NFL. They have holes all throughout their defense, but drafting Micah Parsons would be a step in the right direction. Parsons is the best defensive player in the draft, and will give the Lions a true pillar on defense. Parsons can play inside or outside, and will be someone Dan Campbell would love to have.
10. Dallas Cowboys: CB Patrick Surtain II Alabama
The Cowboys secondary is need of an upgrade, and Surtain would be a good fit in Dan Quinn’s defense. It’s been well-documented how abysmal the Cowboys were in pass-defense last season. In 2020, they let up 29.6 points per game, and Surtain would be able to make an instant impact. Surtain is widely considered to be the best cornerback in the draft.
11. New York Giants: DE Kwity Paye Michigan
Dave Gettleman has a long history of not trading down, and I think that continues in this draft. The Giants could go about this pick in a number of directions, but I think they’ll prioritize help on the defensive line. Paye has a high ceiling, and adding him along side Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence would be a ideal for the Giants defense. I think they ultimately will pass on adding a receiver, after paying Kenny Golladay, so I think Paye would be a nice under the radar fit for this Giants defense. Patrick Graham can really help Paye develop.
12. Philadelphia Eagles: CB Jaycee Horn South Carolina
Cornerback is probably the biggest need for this Eagles team, and Horn is the best cornerback available. The Eagles could look to beef up their offensive line here, but, I think Horn is just too good to pass up on. Horn is battle tested, and has faced the best-of-the-best in the SEC. Even Kyle Pitts had high praise for Jaycee Horn: “That was one of the best DBs (defensive backs) that I went against. It is someone that we are good friends. We compete a lot and you know, throughout the whole game that was someone that wouldn’t let up. … He has great fundamentals and great speed. So, you got to work to beat him.”
13. Los Angeles Chargers: OT Rashawn Slater Northwestern
Rashawn Slater falling to 13 would be a big win for the Chargers. Protecting Justin Herbert is important, and the Chargers offensive line could use an upgrade. The offensive line is not the biggest weakness of this Chargers team, but, Slater is someone with a really high ceiling, and is someone who is difficult to pass up on. On top of that, Slater has experience at both tackle positions, he’s very versatile.
14. Tennessee Titans: WR Jaylen Waddle Alabama (TRADE)
After the Titans, completely whiffed on Isaiah Wilson, I’m expecting the Titans to move up the draft board this go-around. The Titans move up to take the sliding Alabama receiver, and the Vikings move back. The Titans are in desperate need of someone who could play along-side AJ Brown, and Jaylen Waddle could be that guy. A combination of Waddle and Brown would be a nightmare for opposing defenses for years to come. Jaylen Waddle can also help the Titans in the return game, and can be a true four-down player.
15. New England Patriots: OT Alijah Vera-Tucker USC
I think the Patriots are a candidate to move up in the draft, but, ultimately I feel like the Patriots take the versatile offensive lineman, instead. With Trent Brown entering his final year of his contract, and Isaiah Wynn’s inconsistent health status, offensive line is certainly a need for the Patriots. Vera-Tucker is considered to be a safe choice, and has experience at guard and at tackle. This pick might not by flashy, but keeping the offensive line in-tact his pivotal.
16. Arizona Cardinals: CB Caleb Farley Virginia Tech
Farley has quite a bit of injury concerns, but the Cardinals are certainly thin at the cornerback position, and he does have some upside. The Cardinals are in a division with Matthew Stafford and Russell Wilson, they’ll need their secondary to hold up. Farley’s injury concerns are well-illustrated, and present, but Arizona is in a situation in which they need to think big picture. Farley is a guy who can help this team long-term, health permitting. I think they roll the dice with Farley.
17. Chicago Bears: WR DeVonta Smith Alabama (TRADE)
DeVonta Smith is someone that I can see falling to the second-half of round one. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner is someone that can do a multitude of different things, along with helping in the return game. I have the Bears moving up from 20 to 17, to add Smith. Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace are on their last leg, and need some more playmakers on offense. Allen Robinson will play the 2021 season on the franchise tag, and his future is unclear. But, adding Smith to the mix will help Andy Dalton or whoever ends up under center for the Bears. A combination of Allen Robinson and DeVonta Smith in 2021 should bode well for the Bears offense.
18. Miami Dolphins: DE Gregory Rousseau Miami
Arguably the biggest need for the Dolphins is, help on the defensive line. Rosseau is someone that is versatile, and will be able to do different things in Brian Flores’ defense. The Dolphins could go running back here, but after adding Ja’Marr Chase earlier in the draft, I feel like they’ll look to add help on defense. If Rousseau can develop his pass-rushing skills, he will become an anchor on the Dolphins front-7.
19. Carolina Panthers: CB Greg Newsome II Northwestern (TRADE)
After the Panthers trade down from 8 to 19, I have them taking standout cornerback, Greg Newsome II. The Panthers are in dire need of help at cornerback, and they get a good one here pick 19. Newsome II has registered double-digit pass breakups each of the last two seasons. He has a nose for the ball, and is someone that has has seen his draft stock rise over the last month. In a division with Tom Brady, the Panthers will need all the help they can get in the secondary.
20. Las Vegas Raiders: LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah Notre Dame (TRADE)
After trading down a few spots, I have the Raiders selecting Osuwu-Koramoah. He’s a guy that can make an impact on the Raiders defense, in a number of different ways. He’s arguably the most versatitle athlete in this draft. Oswusu-Koramoah projects as an outside linebacker, but I also think he can act as a thumper in the middle of the defense, or even drop back and play a little bit of box-safety. Gus Bradley’s defense should benefit from his versatility, and his pure speed.
21. Indianapolis Colts: DE Jaelan Phillips Miami
Philips has a long history of injuries, but it’s impossible to deny how skillful he is as a pass-rusher. If It hadn’t been for injuries throughout his collegiate career, Phillips certainly projects as a top-15 talent. In 20 career games, Phillips had 23.5 tackles for loss, to go along with 12.5 sacks. He projects to be a dynamic pass-rusher, and someone who could really surprise people. One general manager told Peter King of NBC Sports that, “He’s the best defensive player in this draft.” The Colts could use an upgrade within their front-7, and I think Phillips is worth taking a chance on.
22. Vikings: OT Christian Darrisaw Virginia Tech (TRADE)
After the Vikings elected to move down, they bolster their offensive line with the addition of Christian Darrisaw. According to Pro Football Focus, Darrisaw is the highest-graded power five pass-blocker in the NFL Draft. Darrisaw can help the Vikings offensive line immediately, and this will bode well for Kirk Cousins. After Rashawn Slater was selected one pick ahead of where the Vikings were originally scheduled to pick, trading down and picking Darrisaw makes all the sense in the world.
23. Jets: RB Najee Harris Alabama
After the Jets drafted Zach Wilson with the second-overall pick, I like them taking the first running back in the draft at number 23. During his final two seasons at Alabama, Harris rushed for 2,690 rushing yards, with 39 touchdowns. Harris could be the featured back in New York for years to come, and will help take pressure off Wilson early on.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers: C Landon Dickerson Alabama
With Maurkice Pouncey announced his retirement back in February, the Steelers need to find an answer at the center position. Dickerson, is known to truly be smart at picking up different blitz packages, and is someone who is sufficient at both run and pass blocking. The only caveat with Dickerson tore his ACL in the recent SEC Championship game. That was Dickerson’s second ACL injury, and is something that is worth monitoring. The Steelers could look to address their running game with this pick, but after Harris came off the board, it feels likely that the Steelers would address their offensive line.
25. Jaguars: OT Teven Jenkins Oklahoma State
After the Jaguars select Trevor Lawrence with the first-overall pick, I think the smart play here would be to beef up their offensive line. Teven Jenkins projects to be a tackle at the next level, but is still considered to be a raw prospect. He made 35 total starts at Oklahoma State, and was known to be one of the best run-blocking lineman in college football. After using the franchise tag on Cam Robinson, the Jaguars should be in the market for his potential replacement, and Jenkins fits the bill.
26. Cleveland Browns: DT Christian Barmore Alabama
After the Browns released Sheldon Richardson, they have a clear need at defensive tackle. Christian Barmore is known to be one of the best pure defensive tackles in the draft. The Browns were 30th against the run last season, and adding Barmore would help the cause, as he is known exclusively to be a run-stopper.
27. Baltimore Ravens: WR Rashod Bateman Minnesota
Rashod Bateman would be a perfect fit for the Ravens, as they truly need help at the wide receiver position. Bateman has surreal speed, and is really good at making grabs in traffic. He’s known to be one of the best route runners in the draft, and will give Lamar Jackson another much-needed passing target. A trio of Marquise Brown, Sammy Watkins, and Rashod Bateman projects to be a much better supporting cast then what the Ravens had last season.
28. New Orleans Saints: WR Kadarius Toney Florida
Kadarius Toney seems like the kind of guy that Sean Payton would really marvel at. Toney is a dynamic receiver, and projects to be someone who can really be a playmaker at a moments notice. The Saints are thin at receiver, and that often gets overlooked due to how impactful Alvin Kamara can be in the passing-game. Toney projects to be a slot receiver, and is someone that will surprise people early on. Sean Payton will get the most out of him.
29. Green Bay Packers: S Trevon Moehrig TCU
I think the Packers are a candidate to move down in the draft, but ultimately I have them selecting the best safety in the draft, Trevon Moehrig. He projects to be someone who can play cornerback or safety, and has shown that he can also make an impact as a slot-corner, and can help cover tight ends. Adding Moehrig would give the Packers secondary some flexibility, as they can move some pieces around more often.
30. Buffalo Bills: LB Azeez Ojulari Georgia
The Bills should prioritize adding a pass-rusher early on, and Ojulari is a perfect fit. He’s quick, and has a really high motor, which are two traits that the Bills look for when looking for a pass-rusher. Ojulari is someone who could play as a defensive end, or he can be someone who could play outside linebacker. Look for the Bills to move him around, and to use him as a pure pass-rusher.
31. Baltimore Ravens: LB Zaven Collins Tulsa
The Ravens could look to rade back here, but passing on Collins at 31 is nearly impossible, To me, Zaven Collins is someone that I believe can truly be the steal of the first-round. Collins can play in a number of different roles as a linebacker. He can play outside, or inside, he’s a do-it-all kind of guy. He has a fantastic football IQ, and can start on day one for the Ravens. The Ravens have lost some pieces on defense in recent years, and I see Collins as an ideal replacement for Matthew Judon. The Ravens hit a homerun at the bottom of the first-round.
32. Philadelphia Eagles: WR Elijah Moore Ole Miss (TRADE)
With final pick of the first-round, I have the Tampa Bay Bucs trading back, and the Eagles trading up to take wide receiver, Elijah Moore. He often gets overlooked, but don’t be mistaken, Elijah Moore can flat out fly. In 2020, Moore averaged 149 receiving yards per game, which led the country. After the Eagles snagged Jaycee Horn earlier in the draft, they’re now able to land a dynamic playmaker, with the final pick of the first-round.
Brandon Carr 1.0
1. Jacksonville Jaguars : QB Trevor Lawrence Clemson
This couldn’t be more of a surefire #1 overall pick. We have known ever since the Jags got this pick they were using it to take their signal caller of the future in Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence alongside Urban Meyer will help to steer the Jaguars in the right direction and turn the losing culture they have had into a winning one.
2. New York Jets : QB Zach Wilson BYU
The Jets traded away Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers which immediately signaled that they are going quarterback with this pick. BYU’s Zach Wilson who has shot up draft boards is the odds on favorite to be the Jets future signal caller. Wilson has already begun talking to former Jets’ quarterbacks to get a feel of what it’s like playing for the Jets franchise. This also feels like a lock but not completely, but from what those around the league have been saying, all signs point to Wilson being the Jets pick here.
3. San Francisco 49ers: QB Mac Jones Alabama
The San Francisco 49ers last month made a huge splash when they traded the 12th-overall pick in this year’s draft, a 2022 third-round compensatory pick and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 for the Miami Dolphins No. 3 overall selection. The latest rumor according to Ian Rappoport, is that the 49ers are currently down to Alabama’s Mac Jones and NDSU’s Trey Lance. ESPN’s Todd McShay has reported that the 49ers personnel department wants Lance over Jones but Kyle Shanahan is more infatuated with Jones because he is more of a “coach on the field” which is what Shanahan prefers with his quarterbacks. The 49ers I believe will go Jones with this pick with the simple fact that since Shanahan wants him that holds more weight than the personnel department.
4. Atlanta Falcons: TE Kyle Pitts Florida
The Falcons have a lot of different avenues when it comes to this pick. They could trade this pick to a team that wants to trade up for a quarterback, they could even take a quarterback themselves considering Matt Ryan only has a couple more seasons left under contract with the Falcons, or they could take the best player available which is what I believe they will do in taking Kyle Pitts. I believe that Pitts is as close to a sure thing as you can get with a player in the draft. He in my opinion is the best tight end prospect I have seen come into the league in a long time. The Falcons have a lot of needs but when you have the opportunity to take a player of Pitts’ talent it’s hard to pass up on that opportunity.
5. Cincinnati Bengals: WR Ja’Marr Chase LSU
Although the Bengals would be wise to go offensive line after Joe Burrow tore his MCL and ACL against the Washington Football Team last season, something tells me that the Bengals instead will opt to pair Burrow with his former college teammate in Ja’Marr Chase who Burrow had previously lobbied the Bengals into taking. Chase I believe is the best wide receiver in this draft class by a pretty significant margin and while the smarter pick would be to take a Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater, the Bengals getting Burrow a guy that he can trust in big moments that he has clear chemistry with isn’t the worst thing in the world. For what it’s worth, Duke Tobin who is the director of player personnel for the Bengals had this to say about the offensive lineman in this year’s class, "There are guys that will be available in the second, third rounds that have starter grades on them. Maybe they'll last longer than that, too. It's a position group we've been focused on, and we think having healthy guys there and the addition of Riley Reiff, we think we're in a better spot than we were, and there'll be additions.”
6. Miami Dolphins: LB Mich Parsons Penn State
The Dolphins have been busy as the draft inches closer and closer. They had gone from having the 3rd pick in the draft to having the 12th pick when they made that trade with the 49ers to now having the 6th pick in the draft after trading up with the Eagles. I think the Dolphins traded back up because they have a player in mind that they don’t believe would’ve been there at pick #12. I know that they have been open to trading back again if they receive the right package but I think they stay put and the player that just makes too much sense for me is Penn State’s Micah Parsons. Parsons perfectly fits the Dolphins defensive scheme with their linebackers being asked to be effective in defending the run along with being able to rush after the quarterback. Parsons excels in both of those categories along with being an elite athlete at his position. The Dolphins have a need at linebacker and with the rumors that Flores “loves” Parsons, this just makes a lot of sense to me.
7. Denver Broncos: QB Trey Lance North Dakota State (TRADE)
In this scenario, I have the Denver Broncos trading up 2 spots to ensure that they have an opportunity to draft their signal caller of the future. The Broncos general manager George Paton has made it known that they want to add competition for Drew Lock. The Broncos have Brett Rypien, Jeff Driskel, and just added Teddy Bridgewater to the team. None of these guys seem like the long term options at the position and I think the Broncos, despite trading for Bridgewater, still need a guy they can have long term. Trey Lance to me is the pick here, Lance possesses tremendous upside with having all of the physical tools that you're looking for in a starting QB and his rushing ability can add a whole new dynamic to the Broncos offense. The Broncos have been in attendance for both of Lance’s pro days so they have seen him throw first hand. Lance although having not as many games under his belt as you would like, Lance would be able to sit for however long he needs until he gets his opportunity with Lock and Bridgewater in front of him.
8. Carolina Panthers: OT Penei Sewell Oregon
The Panthers could be very tempted in taking Justin Fields or they trade the pick to a team that wants to trade up for Fields, but I believe that they stay put and take a player that should’ve been taken earlier in Penei Sewell. The Panthers do have a need at this position with Taylor Moton being under the franchise tag and Cameron Erving despite him being signed this offseason, is not even remotely close to being as talented as Sewell. The Panthers don’t waste anytime and get tremendous value with Sewell still being there for them to take
9. New England Patriots: QB Justin Fields Ohio State (TRADE)
The fall of Justin Fields finally comes to a stop. The Patriots I believe with all of the rumors surrounding them wanting to enter the top 10 to grab their signal caller of the future, do it and give up a plethora of future assets to the Lions who continue to stockpile picks, to draft Fields who they have been rumored to have a lot of interest in. Fields would get to learn behind someone who is very similar to him in Cam Newton and have an opportunity to take over the job at some point during the season.
10. Dallas Cowboys: CB Patrick Surtain II Alabama
The Cowboys have a lot of different options with this pick here but what stands out to me is that they have a glaring need at the cornerback position. Right now the team has Trevon Diggs, Anthony Brown, Tarrell Basham, and Jourdan Lewis as their main group of corners on the roster. Adding Patrick Surtain who I believe is the best corner in this class who also is a great fit in new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s Cover 3 scheme, is a fantastic pick for the Cowboys who bolster their pass defense that despite giving up only the 22nd most passing yards in the NFL, get the best defensive player available with Surtain.
11. New York Giants: WR DeVonta Smith Alabama
The Giants had been rumored to be a team that could trade back but despite general manager Dave Gettleman saying that he has tried to trade back in the past, I believe that they stay put. The Giants I know signed Kenny Golladay this offseason to give Daniel Jones some more playmakers on the offense, but from what it sounds like, the Giants aren’t done adding playmakers for Jones. It’s been rumored that Gettleman is targeting WR DeVonta Smith if he is still available according to scouts across the league. Adding Smith makes this wide receiver corps even more deadlier and gives Jones a higher probability that he can take that next step forward.
12. Philadelphia Eagles: CB Jaycee Horn South Carolina
The Eagles have a lot of needs with their roster and I believe that since they have 11 total picks in the draft, I think the Eagles could go best available player here and take Jaycee Horn. The Eagles have a need at the cornerback position and grabbing the talented Horn. The Eagles project to run more zone coverage under new DC Jonathan Gannon and although Horn has been labeled as a man to man corner, he is also excellent in zone coverage as well so he can fit in multiple different coverage schemes. This is a great pick for the Eagles that helps bolster a secondary that besides Darius Slay who is starting to get up there in age, does not have a lot of other talent at the position.
13. Los Angeles Chargers: OT Rashawn Slater Northwestern
The Chargers who have a need at offensive tackle, luck out with Rashawn Slater falling right into their lap. Slater who is considered to be the second best offensive lineman in the draft, can play tackle or kick inside where many view him as a potential all pro as a guard. The Chargers should want to protect Justin Herbert for the foreseeable future. The Chargers signed center Corey Linsley this offseason, adding Slater only helps the cause even more and the Chargers get him at fantastic value.
14. Minnesota Vikings: OT Alijah Vera-Tucker USC
The Vikings just miss out on Rashawn Slater, so they go ahead and grab Alijah Vera-Tucker with their pick here. The Vikings have a big need at offensive line and Tucker is the best available one. Kirk Cousins was pressured the second highest percent of dropbacks per Pro Football Reference (30.2%). Vera-Tucker is better suited on the inside at the NFL level. This Vikings offensive line is in desperate need of offensive line help and Vera-Tucker can help with that.
15. Detroit Lions: WR Jaylen Waddle Alabama (TRADE)
The Lions in my mock draft have been very busy trading back a couple times. They however finally settle on a player that they might have even drafted if they still were at pick #7. Jaylen Waddle slips a little bit and falls right into the Lions’ lap. Waddle is electric with the ball in his hands and with the team having a current wide receiver room consisting of Tyrell Williams, Breshad Perriman, and Quintez Cephus, the team needs to start to add playmakers to this offense. Waddle can also be the team’s punt and kick returner with Jamal Agnew leaving for the Jaguars.
16. Arizona Cardinals: CB Greg Newsome II Northwestern
The Cardinals have a clear need and that includes the cornerback position. They lost longtime Cardinal Patrick Peterson and replaced him with Malcolm Butler to go along with aging Jonathan Joseph and Dre Kirkpatrick which is not enough to move forward with. They elect to pass on Caleb Farley due to his injury concerns and go with a safer selection in Greg Newsome. Newsome, despite him also missing time due to injuries, feels like Farley's back procedure is more of a concern in the eyes of the NFL. Newsome is excellent in coverage along with having really fluid hip mobility.
17. Las Vegas Raiders: LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah Notre Dame
The Raiders last offseason invested in linebackers Nick Kwiatkowski and Corey Littleton. They were not all that effective and the Raiders go with the versatile Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. He’s undersized for the position but his athleticism and versatility can prove to be a valuable asset for the Raiders defense that needs playmakers.
18. Miami Dolphins: DE Kwity Paye Michigan
The Dolphins continue to bolster their defense even more with some much needed help on their defensive line. Kwity Paye is available who fits the Dolphins 4-3 scheme. Paye is a fantastic athlete who could even be more of an inside rusher with his size.
19. Washington Football Team: Christian Darrisaw OT Virginia Tech
Washington doesn't end up moving up to take a quarterback and they elect to take a position of need. Christian Darrisaw is still on the board and with Washington having a glaring hole at the left tackle position that is currently held by Geron Christian Sr. Darrisaw comes in and immediately fills that void to help protect whoever is starting for Washington.
20. Chicago Bears: OT Teven Jenkins Oklahoma State
The Bears just like Washington, don’t trade up for a quarterback in this scenario and they opt to fill one of their needs at the offensive line position. Teven Jenkins is the best available tackle available who is a mauler in the running game. He is physical who although has shorter arms, just plays with a mean streak and attitude that I think will really catch the Bears front office’s eye.
21. Indianapolis Colts: DE Jaelan Phillips Miami
With all of the big named left tackles being off the board, the Colts decide to focus on going with a pass rusher by going with Jaelan Phillips. Phillips possesses a high motor who has a lot of physical attributes that can translate to the next level, he has some injury concerns but he is someone who has really improved their draft stock ever since the offseason has started. Phillips fits in the Colts 4-3 defensive scheme and with the team losing Denico Autry and Justin Houston, there is a hole at the defensive end position that Phillips can fill right in and start right away.
22. Tennessee Titans: CB Caleb Farley Virginia Tech
The Titans lost a lot of talent this offseason. There are a lot of needs with this team and I think they roll the dice and stop Caleb Farley from falling any longer. Farley has seen his draft stock take a dive because of his injury history dating back to a torn ACL in 2017 up until now where he has had back procedures done because of a back injury. Farley if not injured could have been the first corner selected in this draft and maybe even a top 10 pick. The Titans cut ties with Malcolm Butler and Adoree Jackson this offseason leaving them with Janoris Jenkins and Kristian Fulton as their two starting corners. They decide that Farley is worth the risk and take him to potentially reek the benefits of his top 10 upside along with filling a need in their secondary.
23. New York Jets: DE Gregory Rousseau Miami
The Jets after selecting Zach Wilson decide to switch gears and focus on their defense. New head coach Robert Saleh sees an opportunity to grab a guy in Gregory Rousseau who is a little raw but he has tremendous upside. Rousseau who has freaky size for a defensive end last saw him have 15.5 sacks in 2019. He feels like a guy that Saleh and company can try to develop and see if he can use his physical tools to end up being a really great defensive lineman for the Jets. It also helps that he’ll be able to fit in the Jets new 4-3 scheme.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers: RB Najee Harris Alabama
The Steelers do have needs at the offensive line position but they have an opportunity to grab the best running back available now before it’s too late. The Steelers currently have Benny Snell, Anthony McFarland, and Jaylen Samuels in their backfield. They could go either Najee Harris or Travis Etienne, I think they go with Harris because to me Harris fits more of what we’ve seen out of Steelers running backs in the past. He’s your all around running back. He is big, strong, not blazing fast but still quick, nimble, and he is an excellent pass catcher. It adds more fuel to the fire when you hear Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert saying during a pre draft press conference “If you have a dynamic player at any position, that player could make a difference and running back is no different." This was after being asked whether the notion of picking a running back in the first round was risky.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars: LB Azeez Ojulari Georgia
The Jags recorded the second least amount of sacks in the NFL this past season with 18. They take the best EDGE available in Azeez Ojulari. Ojulari is a speedy edge rusher/outside linebacker who also fits the Jaguars new 3-4 defensive scheme. A high character guy who was named as a captain as a freshman for Georgia, will fit right into what the Jags are trying to build with their new culture.
26. Cleveland Browns: LB Zaven Collins Tulsa
The Browns don’t have a lot of pressing needs, giving them a luxury here where they can take who they want. They could use more help with their linebacker corps and the versatile Zaven Collins happens to still be on the board. Collins, the former Bronco Nagurski award winner, has freaky size and athleticism who the Browns could move around their defensive formation.
27. Baltimore Ravens: DE Jayson Oweh Penn State
The Ravens now have two first rounders after trading away Orlando Brown to the Chiefs. This is their own pick and the Ravens decide to take a shot on EDGE Jayson Oweh. Oweh didn’t have any sacks this past season, but he is an absolute freak of an athlete who lit up his pro day. He’s a raw prospect but the Ravens have a great system that can coach him up to work on his ability as a pass rusher, it helps that he is already a plus run defender.
28. New Orleans Saints: WR Kadarius Toney Florida
The Saints are rocking with Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill in the post Drew Brees era. They see this opportunity to add some play makers to their offense. They lost Emmanuel Sanders and Jared Cook in free agency and currently have Michael Thomas, TreQuan Smith, and Marquez Callaway leading that WR room. The elusive and explosive Kadarius Toney is still on the board who provides some much needed help at the position. The NFL seems to be really high on Toney’s playmaking ability, giving Sean Payton someone that he can move around the formation and call plays to get the ball in his hands.
29. Green Bay Packers: OT Samuel Cosmi Texas
The Packers have some holes on their roster but they decide to focus on grabbing an offensive lineman to keep Aaron Rodgers upright for however many years he has left. Samuel Cosmi has had experience playing both tackle positions and although he’s not a mauler in the run game, he is excellent in pass protection and with Corey Linsley leaving for the Chargers and David Bahktiari who tore his ACL late in the season, the Packers should consider grabbing one to give them more stability.
30. Buffalo Bills: CB Eric Stokes Georgia
The Bills have one glaring need to me and that is the cornerback position. The Bills besides Tre'Davious White have not found a consistent option who can play on the opposite field as him. Eric Stokes who is the fastest corner in the draft is still on the board and the Bills waste no time and take him. Stokes’ main knock was the lack of turnovers and lack of strong play strength, his speed and ability to keep up with his man is something that can’t be taught. With some coaching maybe he is able to develop into something more but even if he can’t play on the outside, he can be an excellent slot corner because of his speed.
31. Baltimore Ravens: WR Elijah Moore Ole Miss
The Ravens with their second pick in the first round decide to finally go and get Lamar Jackson some help. Elijah Moore is still available who a lot of NFL teams seem to be really high on. He is a fantastic slot WR who is explosive, has great hands and is a solid route runner. The Ravens need weapons and with the team currently having no slot wide receiver with Willie Snead departing, they could use a guy like Moore to add more explosiveness to this Ravens offense along with getting Lamar some help.
32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: DT Christian Barmore Alabama
The defending Super Bowl champions could go in really any direction as they so please with them returning all of their starters. I could see them going for a guy like Christian Barmore who many see falling out of the first round because of his “resistance to coaching and structure.” I think Tampa Bay with their current infrastructure can be a good situation for Barmore to fix whatever character concerns he may have. Talent wise he is the best IDL in the draft by many and Tampa could move him around the line with his versatility.
Nate Olshan 1.0
1. Jacksonville Jaguars: QB Trevor Lawrence Clemson
This pick seems like a forgone conclusion, and has been since Jacksonville received the first overall pick. The Jags have been desperate for a superstar since the team’s formation in 1993. They’ve also been searching for a franchise QB since then, and Lawrence is what this team needs.
2. New York Jets: QB Zach Wilson BYU
For the last month and a half or so it has seemed like Gang Green will be selecting the BYU standout. While the talented QB hasn’t faced much competition while at college, his potential and ability to be a playmaker speak for itself. The Jets haven’t had an elite QB since Joe Namath, and they’re hopefully, getting one this time around after the so called “savior” Sam Darnold didn’t work out.
3. San Francisco 49ers: QB Mac Jones Alabama
Once San Francisco traded up to the third pick it became clear that they had their eye on a QB. There was talk of them selecting the Alabama standout with their prior pick, but talks progressed with teams trying to trade up, and the 49ers pulled the trigger to facilitate their odds. Jones seems like the perfect scheme fit for head coach Kyle Shanahan as he looks to potentially save his job.
4. Atlanta Falcons: TE Kyle Pitts Florida
Pitts is, in my humble opinion, the best player in the draft. Whichever team gets the star TE will be thrilled with what they’re getting. We’ve seen what new HC Arthur Smith has done with TEs in the past, and selecting Pitts seems like the best option. Even with the rumors of Julio Jones being on the trade block this summer.
5. Cincinnati Bengals: OT Penei Sewell Oregon
If 2020 proved anything, it was that last year’s first overall pick Joe Burrow needs help. He needs offensive line help, and having the gift of potentially selecting the best OL in the draft, seems like a given. Sewell’s ability to protect the QB while at Oregon was a paramount in making him the clear-cut best OL prospect this year.
6. Miami Dolphins: WR Ja’Marr Chase LSU
Tua needs help at receiver, and while some believe that Miami could select the first defensive player off the board, taking Chase is the smart move. With some people believing that Miami could’ve moved on from Tua, just after his first year, they should see how he does with a number one WR before quitting on the former first-rounder.
7. Detroit Lions: LB Micah Parsons Penn State
I could envision Detroit trading back in the draft, but if I were them I’d stay with where they are. They need defensive help, they could select a WR, but passing on the best defender in the class doesn’t seem like the best option. New HC Dan Campbell will want to make a statement in year-one, so by seeing Detroit having their own elite defensive playmaker, is the route I would go.
8. Carolina Panthers: WR DeVonta Smith Alabama
rankly I think it would be foolish for Carolina to: 1) draft a QB after trading for Darnold, and 2) deciding to trade back. Being in position to draft one of the top WRs in the draft is the smart choice. Do for Darnold what the Jets didn’t, by giving him a clear number one receiver who has the potential to be elite. Say what you want about Smith’s size, but the skillset is there. It’s a gamble that they should be willing to take.
9. New England Patriots: QB Justin Fields Ohio State (TRADE)
The Patriots are desperate for a QB, and have been since future Hall of Famer Tom Brady decided to take his talents to Tampa. No elite potential QB will be there at fifteen, so trading up seems like the best choice for New England. Fields is frankly my second favorite QB in the class, and he’d thrive in Bill’s system… If they can get along.
10. Dallas Cowboys: OT Rashawn Slater Northwestern
Much like Cincinnati, Dallas proved last year with the Prescott injury that they need help on the offensive line. Slater is one of the best in the draft, and would be crucial in helping the Cowboys go to the promised land… And by promised land I mean the playoffs since they’re the most overrated organization in sports, and haven’t gone deep in well over 2-decades.
11. New York Giants: WR Jaylen Waddle Alabama
I still doubt that Daniel Jones is the guy for the Giants, but by signing Kenny Golladay that’ll help Jones as he now has a top 30 WR to help him out. Waddle has immense talent, and would help Jones out even more. Loading up on weapons for Jones was GM Dave Gettleman’s goal this offseason, so to get two, would be huge for them.
12. Philadelphia Eagles: CB Patrick Surtain II Alabama
Surtain in the best defensive back in the draft and would help Philadelphia out in a huge way. With failed CB signings in recent memory for the Eagles, it should now be even more clear to the front office that drafting DBs is the route to go. Surtain would provide an immediate impact for an Eagles team that has been searching for a top CB for years.
13. Los Angeles Chargers: OT Christian Darrisaw Virginia Tech
With the emergence of Justin Herbert as the face of the franchise, LA’s top priority needs to be building that offensive line even more. Darrisaw had a breakout year while at Virginia Tech this year, and proved that he is a top prospect heading into the draft. Going to LA to protect Herbert should have this kid, and the team, excited.
14. Chicago Bears: QB Trey Lance North Dakota State (TRADE)
A QB falls every year. That’s common knowledge as it seems to happen at least once a year. Lance, who didn’t play in 2020, will be that guy this time around. While I could see the Eagles as a dark horse team to potentially select a QB if anyone falls to 12, giving Hurts the nod is what needs to be done. Chicago stockpiling draft picks is what this team needs more than anything, well, besides a QB. The Bears have Andy Dalton and Nick Foles as the only two QBs on the roster… Drafting a QB wherever they pick, should be the only option.
15. Denver Broncos: LB Zaven Collins Tulsa (TRADE)
While the Broncos could select a QB at nine, we know that John Elway likes to be creative. Risking that fit for multiple future draft picks is the way to go. Collins is a top 5 defender in this year’s class, he had a huge year at Tulsa, and with Von Miller battling various injuries over the past couple of years, and not getting any younger, take Collins. The Broncos need help up front, and Collins would provide that impact that could help this team for years to come.
16. Arizona Cardinals: DE Kwity Paye Michigan
Paye is the best defensive end in the draft this year. Arizona has a stellar offense, but not that much of a defense, with guys retiring or leaving during recent free agencies. They need help, even with JJ Watt being there, I see him taking more of the mentor role from here on out. Drafting a guy like Paye whose able to get to the QB the way that he can, should have Arizona’s brass foaming at the mouth.
17. Las Vegas Raiders: LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah Notre Dame
The big bad Raiders always have a nice defense, but not anymore. Guys have left, and players were busts. Vegas likes to think outside of the box with former draft guru for NFL Network in Mike Mayock manning the reigns, but he should start making smart moves. Owusu-Koramoah exploded this year while at Notre Dame, and is an all-around elite defender who has the ability to be elite.
18. Miami Dolphins: OT Teven Jenkins Oklahoma State
Another team that needs help at protecting the QB, is Miami. Taking Chase and Jenkins would be huge, especially since this Dolphins team is already so young, and loaded with talent. Tua getting a top WR and an elite potential OL, is the smart way to go this year in round one.
19. Washington Football Team: LB Azeez Ojulari Georgia
WFT taking Ojulari wouldn’t be fair, pairing him up with DE Chase Young would be pretty special to watch every week. While I could see Washington taking one of the WRs here at nineteen, making their prime strength even better, which led them to the playoffs last year, seems like the best option.
20. Minnesota Vikings: OT Alijah Vera-Tucker USC (TRADE)
This is probably the only pick that I wasn’t sold on. Minnesota needs everything really, even a QB. Cousins has been fine, but giving him more protection is really the only route I see them going down. Jefferson was huge last year for the Vikings, getting Vera-Tucker to protect him and Cousins, seems like the smart choice.
21. Indianapolis Colts: WR Elijah Moore Ole Miss
After bringing in Carson Wentz in a trade this offseason with the Eagles, Indianapolis would be wise to draft him a receiver. With T.Y. Hilton coming back, pairing him up with the rising Moore could be a move that ends up being beneficial for the team. Moore surprised scouts during the year with amazing plays and stellar ability. He’d make any NFL happy to have him.
22. Tennessee Titans: WR Kadarius Toney Florida
Another team that could use a receiver is the Titans. Losing Corey Davis to the Jets was a big blow this offseason. Taking the best available WR on the board, or whomever they favor, would be the right move for Tennessee. Toney is another WR that could end up seeing his name rise in most draft boards.
23. New York Jets: RB Najee Harris Alabama
The running game has been, not only nonexistent, but the Jets’ biggest need after QB ever since Curtis Martin retired. Najee Harris has widely been considered the best running back in this year’s draft class. The fit seems perfect, and GM Joe Douglas would be wise to take the elite running back whose seen comparisons to Derrick Henry.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers: RB Travis Etienne Clemson
After missing out on Najee Harris, Pittsburgh, fresh off of losing James Conner to the Cardinals a few weeks ago, are suddenly in the running back market. Jerome Bettis, Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall, Le’Veon Bell, James Conner. This team has bred running backs for the better part of 25-years. Trevor Lawrence’s former teammate would fair just fine with the Steelers, or any running back for that matter.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars: S Trevon Moehrig TCU
Jacksonville needs a suitable replacement for Jalen Ramsey. Now 2-years post-Ramsey, the team is still reeling from that setback, and haven’t found a decent safety to replace him. Moehrig had a great year at TCU as his INTs were up from years past.
26. Cleveland Browns: CB Greg Newsome II Northwestern
Since losing Joe Haden in 2016, Cleveland has not only done a complete shift in an organization, but they haven’t been able to replace the once fan favorite. Newson II showed great promise while at Northwestern, and has proven to be a nice fit for any team that is looking for a corner.
27. Baltimore Ravens: WR Rashod Bateman Minnesota
Baltimore needs to get Lamar Jackson some weapons to work with. Bateman had a breakout sophomore season at Minnesota, and shined in the 5-game season, averaging nearly 100-yds a game. Baltimore needs a WR, and we’ll see who they wind up taking.
28. New Orleans Saints: CB Asante Samuel Jr. Florida State
The Saints could look to take a QB at some point in the draft, but it would be a reach to take someone at 28. Samuel Jr. had a big year for Florida State, and is bound to be a great player for whoever takes him. And the Saints could definitely use his help as they’ve lacked production in their secondary.
29. Green Bay Packers: WR Terrace Marshall LSU
Not getting any help for Aaron Rodgers makes no sense, and it’s about time that they take one, and not a QB again, this year. Marshall has been rising on most teams’ draft boards ahead of the big night, and would provide an instant to this Packers team.
30. Buffalo Bills: RB Javonta Williams North Carolina
The Bills seem like they’ll be looking at the RB availability here, and will probably go with the best remaining one. Williams is a little less known, but he had a big year at North Carolina and would do a great job at helping Josh Allen. He’d also take some pressure off of Allen, and could help the offense tremendously.
31. Baltimore Ravens: DE Jaelan Phillips Miami
After taking the best WR at 27, Baltimore should focus on taking a pass rusher with their second first round pick. Philips broke out this year at Miami and took scouts by storm. Coming to Harbaugh’s defense, and for an organization that produces great defensive players.
32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: C Landon Dickerson Alabama
The rich get richer here and will most likely have the opportunity to take the center with arguably the most potential in the draft. Dickerson is coming off of a major injury, and saw his draft stock fall, but with Brady not getting any younger, Tampa Bay will probably look to give him some help.
