Welcome to the second edition of The Ring Announcer.
Bobby Lashley and Drew McIntyre are set to square off at WrestleMania, and the anticipation is through the roof.
Bobby Lashley is the reigning WWE Champion and deserves more than what he is bargaining for, in this year's Wrestlemania. Lashley is a decorated Champion, he is a three-time national wrestling champion and a four-time wrestling All-American. He's also a two-time Armed Forces Champion and took home the silver medal in the 2002 CISM World Championships, competing against the best of the world's military. In the WWE Lashley has held the United States title and Intercontinental title on two occasions, the ECW Championship on two occasions, a four time TNA World Champion and the second man in TNA History to win all the brands gold in one match.
Now to the challenger, Drew McIntyre is also a decorated champion who also is deserving of the main event spot. McIntyre is a former Intercontinental Champion, a three-time Tag Team Champion in the WWE. He had two of the best talents to team with (Cody Rhodes and Dolph Ziggler), a former NXT Champion, a former Evolve Champion. McIntyre, similar to Lashley has held the TNA World Championship, and is a two-time WWE Champion.
Currently the plan is for this match to be the main event on night one of two of this year's WrestleMania 37 weekend. Now, these men have faced each other before. Last year at WWE Backlash these two went at it with McIntyre retaining his WWE Championship. Now, they had met prior to this in a high profile match back in 2016 where the match was stipulated “Must win by Tap Out or Knockout”. In the end of that match it was Lashley with the knockout submission.
The way that TNA at a time booked Lashley was to be their Brock Lesnar. TNA was big on booking Lashley as a top guy and had some great stories to build with Lashley while they had him.
Now, from the looks of it, the WWE is going to book this finish with McIntyre going over (WIN) in night one for Maina.
For Lashley to only hold the title to just drop it at WrestleMania is very disheartening. Lashley as a champion deserves more than just being a placeholder for Drew McIntyre, to go back to WrestleMania to have his moment. Nothing at all against McIntyre. He has had a great wrestling career and has had his true WrestleMania moment. Lashley had a moment back at WrestleMania 23 when he was picked to be the representative in the “Battle of the Billionaires” for Donald Trump vs. Vince McMahon’s representative Umaga.
If it wasn’t for The Miz cashing in his Money in the Bank opportunity against McIntyre following the Elimination Chamber, we would not be talking about Lashley in the Main Event.
The idea behind the booking makes sense, McIntyre gets screwed due to the cash in, Miz wins the title, later on is challenged by Lashley and you have your main event picture. I think if this was the plan all along the story could have started at the Royal Rumble.
Looking back at both records for both Superstars since WrestleMania 35. Lashley is 0-2 with a combined in-ring time of 11 minutes and 25 seconds on the main stage. While, McIntyre is 1-1, unless you count the match following the main event vs. Brock Lesner at last year's WrestleMania with The Big Show. Then he has a record of 2-1, with a combined in-ring time of 21 minutes and 40 seconds.
Now you are probably asking yourself why is this relevant?
For any championship match there is that Tale of the Tap, and it is no different for this one and you can always see what the WWE has in mind.
Both men are deserving to be on the WrestleMania card this year especially with fans back in attendance. If it goes in favor of McIntyre at the end of the night he has proved to be a great champion and it shows that the WWE has a true new face. The two men that are deserving to be in championship position, and only one will walk out of Tampa the WWE Champion.
Who wants it more?
