The series finale, for now, of WandaVision came to us faster than Quicksilver. Episode 9 titled “The Series Finale”, was a really well done wrap-up of everything and ended the show on a promising note. Wanda has fully embraced being the Scarlet Witch, as well as her magical abilities. The real Vision is out there, somewhere, and could fully regain his memories. Lastly, Wanda is in possession of the Darkhold and could come across a spell to bring her sons Billy and Tommy back.
If there’s one law of nature that’s been manipulated within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)… It’s that death isn’t always everlasting. WandaVision even did it with Vision, twice, and “he” isn’t even human. Seeing Wanda sacrifice her children and Vision to save the real people of Westview, was a very heartfelt moment. That gesture has even stabilized her character arch, for some, as the best within the MCU. For me, Wanda’s emotional journey in the show has made her one of my favorite characters within the MCU for sure. Her path from here on out, which we will next see on March 25, 2022 when Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness hits theaters, is one that I am extremely excited to see.
Agatha’s grand plan came to an end when Wanda tricked the villain and absorbed her magic, instead of the other way around. Also mind controlling her for the foreseeable future. It’s revealed that Agatha in fact wanted to obtain Wanda’s Chaos Magic for herself. She also reveals that the book she’s had that was first shown in episode 7, is exactly what I predicted; the Darkhold. The Book of Sins is the most powerful book within the world of Marvel, which was written by the God of Chaos, Chthon. Who I thought would appear in the finale, but maybe someday he will.
We definitely haven’t seen the last of Agatha Harkness. Her saying, “you’ll need me,” then Wanda saying, “and when I do I will know exactly where to find you,” seals it. She could pop up in next year’s Doctor Strange sequel, possibly being “rescued” by the main villain, if not Chthon himself.
The real Vision is still out there, and we definitely haven’t seen the last of him. With Vision “mind-melting” with white Vision, the real Vision now has his memories back. Without having the mind stone, Vision is now alive in his own right and is free of that burden. I don’t think he’ll pop up in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, but I think there’s a strong chance of him appearing in a mid-credits scene. Wanda finding him or vise-versa and the two embrace in a much needed hug.
The hype behind the fake Vision was justified. He was a formidable foe who by the end was good, or at least will be at some point. The comics version of white Vision saw the same characteristics as this one. He’s a little more charismatic than he was with the Infinity Stone, while also having no emotion or memories of Wanda. We saw that pretty well when he nearly popped Wanda’s head! Fake Vision reconciling with the “foe”, and helping him to remember who he truly is, was a great moment. Real Vision now knows that he once had memories and a happy life. Now he’s off to be one with himself as he battles his own inner demons until he can be with Wanda again.
We found out that "Pietro Maximoff," who had been controlled by Agatha Harkness for the latter half of the series, was actually just a resident of Westview, NJ named Ralph Bohner. He was the missing person from episode 4 who Monica Rambeau and Jimmy Woo were trying to find. Despite being played by Evan Peters, who played a version of Pietro Maximoff, known as Peter Maximoff, in four of Fox's X-Men films, the MCU is now telling us that the fake, Agatha-controlled Pietro was actually just a guy named Ralph. So no major crossover… Just yet.
And while it isn't the massive twist/crossover that we expected it to be, it does remain consistent with the series. Remember that throughout the episodes, Agnes referred to her unseen husband as Ralph. Many theorized that "Ralph" could be the introduction of Mephisto: a Marvel villain, typically the universe's take on the Devil, but that was yet another incorrect theory. Ralph, as it turns out, was just a dude looking to chill.
This Ralph Bohner, in fact, looks like he's an actor? Monica found some documents with his name on them, including a headshot (with what looks like a younger actual Evan Peters headshot?) That's not to say that this "Ralph Bohner" definitely isn't Peter Maxmioff/Quicksilver. Let's also remember why FBI Agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) made his way to Westview in the first place: he was checking up with someone in the witness protection program. That seems like a pretty good reason for someone who's made their way through the multiverse, say, from one cinematic universe to another, to be in hiding, with different documents and a new identity. And does "Ralph Bohner" not sound like a name that the character we've seen in those X-Men movies would make up? Maybe Jimmy is in on it, maybe he's not. But that seems like a definite possibility; the idea of someone in the witness protection program wasn't just thrown in for no reason.
It's also possible that Agatha fabricated some documents, creating an identity when she pulled Peter from the multiverse into the MCU? Remember, we did get a whole fake ad about Nexus, which almost exclusively ties Wanda to being a Nexus Being and thus being one of the most powerful inter-dimensional beings. The Nexus will be introduced in the upcoming Loki series on Disney+. The Nexus is a literal gateway to the multiverse that is guarded by thousands of Nexus Beings, in their own realms.
Peters' Peter Maximoff was one of the best parts of the late Fox X-Men movies, and the idea that he could return and cross over was an exciting one for fans to latch onto. And even if they meant it as a joke, there's always the chance that Kevin Feige and company could see how excited fans were, and figure out a way to make it work. After all, the groundwork is clearly already there. The next Doctor Strange movie is literally titled in the Multiverse “of Madness,” after all, there's a lot of potential in that title. We'll just have to wait and see.
Monica’s powers were finally fully introduced, in a way, and we get to see how powerful she actually is. While she doesn’t have a superhero name, I guarantee that when we see her again, it will be Photon. As a namesake to her late mother’s nickname, and it also happens to be her most popular alias in the comics. We’ll see her again in Captain Marvel 2 and presumably Disney+’s Secret Invasion series. The mid-credits scene saw a Skrull reveal herself to Monica saying that “he” is on your radar.
While some are thinking it’s Talos, whose the one person in the MCU who has tabs on everyone, has a strong relationship with the Skrulls, and is in Outer Space? Nick Fury! He will star in the Secret Invasion series with Talos, and will likely pop up in Captain Marvel 2 as I fully expect that film to set the groundwork for Secret Invasion. In the comics Secret Invasion revealed that for years evil Skrulls, led by the Fantastic Four villain Super-Skrull, infiltrated earth’s leading government officials, multiple superheroes, and thousands of random people.
Monica, being a friend and ally to Carol Danvers in the comics, and will probably be the next director of S.W.O.R.D, will have a huge part to play in the battle ahead. Especially since she will most likely be trained by Danvers, since their powers are relatively similar. So if you were a fan of Monica and are worried about when she might appear again if at all, look no further! She’ll be back, eventually.
Tyler Hayward’s time on WandaVision came, to me at least, a bad ending. Him being locked up actually didn’t make much sense at all. William Hurt’s General Ross in 2008’s Incredible Hulk single handedly was responsible for the destruction of Harlem in creating Abomination. Then in Captain America: Civil War he single handedly divided the Avengers and should’ve started a war as the Avengers completely annihilated an Airport in Berlin. So I’m just going to assume he has some sort of diplomacy that allows him to destroy cities and airports.
If one thing’s for sure, it’s that a villain is never truly gone. We’ve seen multiple villains return before such as Baron Zemo who will make his MCU return later this month on Disney+’s The Falcon & The Winter Soldier. I believed that Hayward was Ultron in disguise, and while that doesn’t seem plausible right now, what if he’s a Skrull? Hayward’s personality seemed to drastically change from when we first met him. He seemed like a father figure to Monica and like a guy who could serve as a Nick Fury-type character. Then when we see him at the Hex, he’s done a complete 180 and seems like a different person. Maybe Super-Skrull sent a lackey to earth after Vision was nearly reconstructed, and to deal with Wanda.
Hayward knew, in the eighth episode, to absorb chaos magic to be a jumpstart on the Vision body to resurrect it. I simply won’t believe that that was Hayward’s idea, UNLESS he’s someone else who will be revealed down the line.
I believe that WandaVision, Loki, Ms. Marvel and possibly Hawkeye, could all have a character within them that leads up to Secret Invasion. It’s no secret that Marvel loves crossovers, so these shows planting the seeds to lead-up to their big comic book event, would make perfect sense. Monica’s a shoe-in, but having Super-Skrull send a villain for each of these shows, would make for a very nice crossover down the line.
Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo are the two characters whose stories weren’t fully wrapped up by the end of the episode. The last we see of Darcy is her helping to get Director Hayward arrested by Jimmy’s FBI buddies. Jimmy isn’t rally seen after getting Hayward arrested and the door is left wide open for both him and Darcy to appear again. Kat Dennings’ Darcy first appeared in 2011’s Thor, and her last appearance was in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. This wasn’t her first rodeo in dealing with super powered individuals before, and I believe it isn’t her last. It would come as no surprise if she were to be invited by Monica to join her in space when she reappears in Captain Marvel 2.
Randall Park on the other hand has been generating a lot buzz to get his own Disney+ spinoff, Agents of Atlas. They’re a team of Asian superheroes such as Shang-Chi (who is getting his own movie later this year in Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings), Namora, Brawn, Venus, Marvel Boy, Aero, and Sword Master. Director Stephen Ford even went as far as to tweet this:
“Uh. Wow. So. We might have actually opened some doors on my Jimmy Woo X-Files idea.
I'm spending the weekend writing the pitch.
Can't express how much of an underdog I am in this scenario so get too excited but cross your fingers and thanks to everyone who made it possible.”
Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu has voiced his desire for Jimmy Woo to get this spinoff by quote tweeting Ford’s tweet and saying: “Down. Maybe they’d let me cameo too?”
Kat Dennings seems to be on board with this idea too, as in a recent interview with Extra, the Marvel Studios actress talked about how fun her and Park’s scenes were to film together, and when asked about a potential spin-off said: “I’m in. I’m in! If it happens, I’ll be there.”
It would be blasphemous to not end this article about Wanda. Her arch in the series, and her journey as a character to become what she was meant to be be, was executed perfectly. Her arch in the MCU is probably my favorite of any character, after Steve Rogers of course… For now at least. Huge shoutout to the costume designers on the show as they made Wanda’s goofy comic book costume, into one of the better suits in the MCU to date. I feel like it really accentuates her crazy, yet, contains it so it isn’t off the charts. Wanda destroying he Hex to save thousands, and in doing so, killing her twins and Vision, was the most heartfelt scene I have seen during the Coronavirus pandemic.
It also made me remember how much I love these Marvel movies, and now the shows. It’s been too long since we’ve had something Marvel related and WandaVision was a perfect startup again. Wanda taking the Darkhold, let alone reading through the entire book, is very cool, yet more eerie than anything. In the comics it’s said that anyone who reads the book goes insane. The Book of Sins and the power within it is just too much for anyone to handle. Maybe that’s what Agatha meant all along about Wanda and her not knowing what she’s doing.
Agatha could’ve believed that Wanda would read the book and go crazy, and her already wielding Chaos Magic could maybe be a combination for disaster. Let’s say when Wanda’s reading is over, she begins to go a little insane. She sees visions of Chthon or someone else, and maybe she’ll seek out Doctor Strange’s assistance before she goes completely insane. They’re setting Wanda up for an interesting arch here moving forward. She’ll have the path of being a villain literally at her finger tips, or she can control this power and use it for good. Hearing the voices of Billy and Tommy as she read the book, is a good sign. It signifies that the boys aren’t “gone” and that Wanda wants to pull two of them out of the multiverse to be her children.
While that’s a little sinister in it’s own right, it isn’t evil. She’s just a grieving widow, for now, who also now happens to be grieving for her deceased fabricated children. At some point Wanda, Vision, Billy and Tommy will be a family again in the MCU. I’m willing to bet good money on that, but it won’t be for a while. It very well could be wrapped up in The Multiverse Of Madness, but we have to remember that this is Doctor Strange’s movie, not Wanda’s. Wanda might be a supporting character opposite of Doctor Strange, but I don’t see this being wrapped up that quickly.
All-in-all, I would say that the finale was really well done. At the end of the day we got:
- Setup for Captain Marvel 2
- Wanda studying the Darkhold and keeping Agatha around
- The real Vision was resurrected
- Confirmation that Billy and Tommy aren’t gone
- Wanda in an accurate costume
- Monica gets her powers
Those are all really great pieces of information that we got, and while fan theories, mine included, were off the charts and wrong, I was pleased with the finale. It was a fitting end to a great show, and set up Wanda’s new arch in a wonderful, yet eerie, way.
