Moon Knight, yet another amazing show in Marvel's expanding Disney+ slate, has quickly become one of the most anticipated MCU shows amongst the fan base. Especially with Oscar Isaac set to star as the mysterious superhero. While the show probably won’t appear for another year or so, it has garnished a lot of excitement around it. Jeremy Slater will serve as the showrunner. Slater has been tapped to develop and lead the writing team for the highly anticipated series. Slater is behind Netflix's comic book adaptation of The Umbrella Academy. He was also a co-writer on 2015's Fantastic Four… But let’s not think about that.
Isaac will lead the series as Marc Spector while May Calamawy has joined the series in an unannounced role. Ethan Hawke will be playing the main villain, although specific details about his character are being kept under wraps. Production is set to begin this month in Budapest. The directors that Marvel and Disney have hired are pretty impressive as Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab has been tapped to direct Moon Knight. Diab and his directing partner Justin Benson will also be directing "several episodes” together.
Marvel has been trying to make a Moon Knight movie or TV series for YEARS now. Way back in 2006 Marvel discussed bringing Moon Knight to the small screen with a TV series, 2-years before the MCU was even a thought. However, that fell through. Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn discussed back then that he once pitched a Moon Knight movie to the studio, but it never came to be.
The character's backstory is fascinating. Marc Spector is a former boxer who becomes a marine and later a mercenary. After he gets involved with the Egyptian Gods on an archaeological expedition, he's offered a chance to redeem himself by becoming a God's avatar on Earth. He calls himself, "The Fist of Khonshu," with Khonshu being the ancient Egyptian God of the Moon. Spector also has dissociative identity disorder, while also frequently being compared to DC Comics' Batman over the years. Spector has three personalities: Steven Grant, a Bruce Wayne-esque stock market millionaire who funds Spector’s “crusade” as Moon Knight. The second is Jake Lockley, a street-smart and sometimes violent everyman cab driver from New York. His last personality believes that he is a member of the Avengers, who waits by a phone to get their call to fight alongside them. You could also argue that Khonshu using Spector’s body as an avatar at times, is a fourth personality. There's also the more complicated matter of Moon Knight, who is just an alter ego and not an alt-personality.
Mental health is a huge part of this character as throughout the comics Spector struggles to realize his worth as a superhero, and at times is on the line of hero, and anti-hero. While he suffers from a handful of mental health alignments, it’s one of the reasons why he’s so important. And why a show staring Moon Knight is needed more than ever. As mental health continues to be a huge aspect in everyday society, Marvel Studios really hasn’t focused on it yet. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier seems like it will heavily revolve around Bucky’s mental health as he struggles to cope with his past deeds as a “villain.” That alone tells me that mental health will be a prominent factor on Moon Knight as well.
With the Covid-19 pandemic heightening many people’s anxiety and depression, Moon Knight could be used as a deterrent to help people in the real world. Having a superhero who deals with that, makes him, or her, feel all the more real to people all around the world. It’s long overdue that a character like this is given a shot to be in the spotlight, and I couldn’t think of an actor better suited for the role than Oscar Issac.
Not much is known about the series at all really, but it has the potential to connect to the larger MCU. Marvel loves to tease things, and to set up future projects. Moon Knight isn’t an Avenger; he’s not someone who might ever interact with the “mainstream” MCU characters for that matter. So don’t get your hopes up, because that’s not who he is. Moon Knight has frequently teamed up with Ghost Rider, Blade and the Punisher in the comics though. They’ve gone by the Hearts of Darkness and the Midnight Sons before, and all of whom have a role to play in the MCU at some point in the future. Blade will be getting his own movie with Mahershala Ali set to star. Jon Bernthal has been very vocal on social media about wanting to return as the Punisher. And MCU President Kevin Feige as said that he wants to, “play with Ghost Rider,” eventually.
Moon Knight’s powers are pretty vague. Thanks to his military training he has the skills of a soldier, but when it comes to being a superhero, that’s where it gets a little murky. He has a high pain tolerance and depending on the situation, his multiple personalities either aid or hinder him when it comes to fighting others. Also, considering his powers are from the Moon God, his powers depend on the lunar cycles. But Khonshu’s powers for the most part stick with Moon Knight during times of no lunar cycle. He has one of my favorite superhero costumes in all of comics. Some of his suit is made up of adamantium (the same metal that Wolverine's claws are made of.) He also has a giant cape to help him fall with style from great heights.
The fan base is there. The excitement is there. The elite lead-actor is there! Now let’s just hope that Slater, Feige, Victoria Alonso, Diab, Benson, and everyone else involved, can deliver.
