Oh Walking Dead, what are you doing… This episode is absolutely terrible and probably is the now in the top 3 of the worst episodes of all time. This is up there with “Swear” in season 7, “Thank You” in season 6, “Cherokee Rose” in season 2, or “Here’s Not Here” in season 6. I know this a Carol and Daryl episode so that might save some fans, seeing their fan favorites, but it does not save me. This episode better not be a foreshadow of how the Carol and Daryl spin off show will be because I will be completely checked out of that one like I am with The World Beyond and Fear the Walking Dead (although Morgan and Dwight/Sherry are saving that show at the moment and I am going to watch the back half of season 6). The experiment of season 10C is over. It was a failure. I know AMC had to appease fans in releasing some content because of the huge gap since Covid-19 happened, but these episodes are a waste of time.
If you like Carol making soup, Dog chasing a rat, Daryl fixing a part on his motorcycle, or Jerry’s sensitive side, you have came in the right place, but if you don’t, run away as far as possible. This is all you get in “Diverged.” When I get to watching the whole series over again (which I have already done this three times) this episode will definitely be a skip. Daryl and Carol spend a whole episode apart, with Carol and Dog going to the left of the path and Daryl going to the right of the path. Carol wonders what to do with her time so she decides to make soup but there is a rat problem in the Alexandra pantry. She spends a lot of the episode getting the rat to leave the pantry while destroying the place in process. You never see the final product with the soup but you assume they eat it because she offers Jerry some at the end of the episode. Daryl on the other hand, while riding his motorcycle, it breaks and needs to fix it. During the episode you see Daryl trying to scrap different cars for the bike and successfully fixes it. After he fixes it, he returns home to Alexandra.
The only takeaway from “Diverged” is Carol and Daryl learning how to spend time away from each other. Like any fight, they just needed some time apart to focus on themselves. After the fight in the ending scene of “Find Me”, things are definitely still awkward but you can see the love in their friendship. Jerry tries to cheer up Carol because he sees her bothered by something and notices that they didn’t return together. He pokes fun at it sometimes but helps her at the same time. In the night, Carol even tells Dog that she misses Daryl. When Daryl comes back home, although it is still a little tense, they talk like normal. They ask how their trips were and everything seem normal. Daryl even gives his multitool to Carol and tells her to keep it. You can still see their relationship and nothing will ever keep them apart. Even though they fought, they still will care about each other until the end of time.
With all that being said, I give The Walking Dead’s season 10 episode 21 “Diverged” 0 out of 5 stars. I know this is the lowest that I can go but this episode deserves it. You can go without this episode in the story. I am going to skip it every time I see this on Netflix or on regular TV. You can skip this episode because I bet in season 11, Daryl and Carol will be back to normal and this episode will be pointless. I really hope that the next episode is worth it or I wasted 6 weeks of my life. Like I have said in all my reviews and prediction articles, I am so hyped for “Here’s Negan” so they better not let me down.
