When the season finale of Loki aired this past summer, the climax made it quite obvious that a second season could be coming, and the “end credits scene” confirmed that the hit series had been renewed. The fallout to Sylvie arrogantly killing He Who Remains quickly began to come crashing in as the multiverse unraveled, as Loki was sent back in a portal to the TVA where Mobius doesn’t seem to remember Loki, and a Kang (He Who Remains) variant is seemingly running the TVA. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige just recently confirmed that the death of He Who Remains caused the multiverse troubles in both Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Loki trying to set things right will definitely be the plot of the incoming season, and with filming set to begin on June 6th, we might get some more details sooner rather than later, as well as confirmation that Jonathan Majors will be back as Kang.
In the end of March, right before Moon Knight debuted on Disney+, Comicbook.com spoke with Loki's season 2 directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, who also directed episodes 2 and 4 of Moon Knight. The duo shared some details on Loki as well:
“I think the biggest thing about Loki is just that it's actually a lot like Moon Knight, where there's just no reason to do it if it's not going to be something new and fresh. It's funny, it does feel like Marvel would be willing to walk away unless it’s actually something that they felt ‘the unexpected.’ Like from Moon Knight and especially because Moon Knight is a character where nobody knows almost anything about him, yet. Soon to be changed, right? And so our gloves are off and we get to kind of do whatever we want. And everybody at Marvel and ourselves gets really excited when we are presented with the unexpected. We also of course, hope that people watching feel the same way and we're gonna bring all that to Loki."
While nothing has been confirmed nor denied about the upcoming season, it’s safe to assume that it’ll be Loki vs Kang, and this version of Kang that we’ll see will NOT be the main MCU version that will soon wreck havoc in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania who will also be the next main villain of the MCU. That being said, whose to say that this variant won’t be in cahoots with the “main” Kang? In fact, Kang even assembles a Council of Kangs in the comics to serve as a means of authority or order to keep every variant of himself in check, and to also inspire fear and order throughout the multiverse. So it’s very possible that we could get a version of this, if not in Quantumania, in the second season of Loki.
If you know me, you know that I’m a massive fan of Kang the Conquer as he’s my favorite Marvel Comics villain, and one of my top five favorite Marvel characters in general. Jonathan Majors is a great actor on the rise, and Marvel Studios being able to reel him in for a role, and a great on at that, is perfect. Him being revealed in the finale after a handful of teases throughout the season, was the icing on the cake for my favorite Marvel show on Disney+ thus far. We might not see him a whole lot in the second season, but that’s ok. He’s a menacing presence and a string puller, as was clearly brought to life in first season. He’s a villain who likes to remain in the shadows and to only reveal himself when he deems necessary.
While it remains to be seen how Loki and Sylvie will get onto good terms again, she’ll definitely be returning and will have a big role. Unless the show picks up right where it left off, it would be nice to have a time-jump to see what she’s been up to, for this “ruler” Kang to be fully established, and for Loki to be hellbent on stopping Kang, jogging Mobius’ memories, and trying to fix this timeline that’s seemingly been corrupt by Kang. It’s safe to say that Kang will be the main villain of the show’s second season, but you never know what Marvel may have up their sleeves. Baron Zemo has been a frequent follower and ally of Kang, so maybe we could get a Zemo variant whose doing Kang’s dirty work. The space pirate Flying Dutchman is another possibility, as well as Immortus, who just so happens to be persona of Kang’s from the past, who if done on the show, could merely be a variant who could be played by another actor.
It’s possible that Kang, who I would assume this variant will be fully aware of the temporary fall of the TVA, could try to create the Null-Time Zone. The Null-Time Zone, also knows as the Null, exists outside of space and time and is utilized by the Time Variance Authority as their base of operations in the comics. While it isn’t fully explained in season one, Kang could go into greater detail about it in his quest to make the Null the permanent time zone of all of space and time. As seen in season one, the TVA can operate in the Null and effect time at ease without any consequences. Kang’s ultimate goal could very well be the put this time zone into effect for all of creation where he could do whatever he wants without consequences, whenever he wants.
The last we saw of Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Ravonna Renslayer, she hopped into a portal to find the creator of the TVA. In the comics, Kang and Renslayer are’t only allies whose relationship spans across every version of themselves in the multiverse, they’re also husband and wife. Since they were children they were best friends who, even after Nathaniel Richards (Kang) went down a deep and dark villainous path, she still stood by his side through thick and thin. It would make perfect sense if Kang, the prime one of Earth-616 wherever he is, were to brainwash his Ravonna for her own safety, and to put her in charge as the judge of the TVA. In fact, the 2021 “Kang the Conquerer” run in the comics, which finally revealed a clear origin to the complex character, it was revealed that Kang has, on more than one occasion, wiped Renslayer’s memories to protect her.
With He Who Remains being the founder and creator of the TVA, one would assume that he’d do the same, to protect his wife from all of this, and to put her in a place of power where he could watch her every move.
Mobius on the other hand seems to have his same role within the TVA in this fractured timeline, and could very well be evil for a majority of the season until Loki is able to somehow fix things. They left on great terms towards the end of the first season, and having this “alternate reality” storyline getting put into place is sad to see. Loki finally had a friend, for the first time in his long life, he had someone besides his mother who understood him and was able to “bring him back to Earth” in containing his inner demon and being a hero. Getting the band back together in Loki, Mobius, and Sylvie won’t happen right away. Loki will seemingly be a prisoner of the TVA once again, Sylvie will either be on the run or living a fake life somewhere, and Mobius will be, once again, a pawn of the TVA.
Showrunner Kate Herron quickly announced her departure from the show following the season one finale, stating that she never planned to do a second season. In speaking with Deadline last July, Herron said, "I'm really happy to watch it as a fan next season. I'm proud of what we did here and I've given it my all." Moon Knight’s Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have since signed on to co-direct. The first season’s writers Michael Waldron and Eric Martin are set to return. Waldron wrote the script for The Multiverse of Madness.
Tom Hiddleston initially stated that he was, "excited about the possibilities" and that the team was in "deep, deep, deep discussions" following the announcement of season two… but the actor has been very quiet about the second season ever since. Mbatha-Raw told Popculture.com that she's excited for her character to go to, "some deeper, darker places." Renslayer was initially introduced as an anti-hero of sorts and potential love interest of Mobius, but was ultimately revealed as a villain who values her loyalty to the TVA above anything else. "She wants to find who pulled the wool over her eyes. That's what she's going to go out in search of," head writer Michael Waldron revealed. "She is a scary customer to be out there in the multiverse. So we'll see what happens."
While Sylvie actress Sophia Di Martino told RadioTimes that she's not sure whether or not her character will return, she has said that Sylvie's final scene is, "an interesting place to start another chapter.” Just recently, Hiddleston was asked whether Loki appears in the upcoming Marvel movie Thor: Love and Thunder, to which he remained understandably very coy. "I'm living in a question mark," the actor told Total Film. "It's all unknown. You know, I used to think that I could predict these things, but I literally have no idea. And I'm not even doing an Andrew Garfield!"
When quizzed about the second season, he added: "What can I say? It's very much continuing to excite and challenge me. At the end of season 1, the story isn't over. I think that’s really clear. Loki's almost more unstable, and as turbulent and passionate and chaotic as he's ever been. And maybe some of that needs resolution. There's stuff to unpack."
Because the first season ended in complete and utter chaos, theories surrounding the incoming second season are as such. Sylvie set off a multiverse war, Loki is stranded in another dimension, and an even more dangerous variant of He Who Remains has rose to power. In the new timeline that Loki finds himself trapped in, a statue of Kang the Conqueror is present. While Mobius and Hunter B-15 don’t remember Loki in this newfound timeline, Sylvie might. This is possible considering that it was Sylvie who killed He Who Remains and sent Loki to this new reality. A romance between Renslayer and Kang also seems imminent, based on what Mbatha-Raw and Waldron have said of late.
It’s also possible that a TVA uprising could be on the horizon. Now that all the foot soldiers of the TVA have had their minds erased due to the slaying of He Who Remains, Loki is the only one who can make them remember what happened. Once they recall the horror of being kidnapped from their own timelines and subsequently brainwashed, the TVA could unite to bring down this VARIANT of Kang.
Perhaps the most interesting theory comes due to the releases of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: now that the multiverse is open, could Loki team-up with Wanda/Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange eventually, like they have in the comics? New MCU sorceress Clea, played by Charlize Theron, has also teamed up with the characters as well. With Kang the Conqueror set to be the main antagonist of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it isn't out of the realm of possibility for other characters in the MCU to show up in an alternate timeline.
No release date has been announced for the second season, but it’s safe to assume that it could release on Disney+ in mid-late 2023.
