High School
Tyjae Spears played his high school football at Ponchatoula High School in Louisiana. Spears in his senior season, totaled 1,800 yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns. After Spears received some offers, Spears decided that he would commit to Tulane as a three star recruit.
Freshman
Spears saw very little action in his true freshman season. In four games in which he appeared in, Spears totaled 325 yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns. Spears earned his eligibility to redshirt.
Redshirt Freshman
At the start of his redshirt freshman season, Spears saw action in three games for the Green Wave. In those three games, Spears totaled 304 yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns. Unfortunately, Spears suffered a torn ACL and missed the rest of the season in a game against Southern Miss.
Redshirt Sophomore
Spears returned back from his injury looking to make an impact. Spears didn’t disappoint as Spears would establish himself as the lead back over the course of the season with 1,008 yards from scrimmage and 9 total touchdowns. Spears over the last three games of the season, would carry the ball 57 times for 479 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Redshirt Junior
Spears finished the previous season scorching hot. This momentum would carry with him throughout the course of his redshirt junior season as Spears would finish with the 5th most rushing yards (1,586) and the 2nd most rushing touchdowns (19) in the FBS. Spears would be named as the AAC offensive player of the year and Tulane would have one of its best seasons in program history as they would finish with a 12-2 record. Spears would forgo another year he had of eligibility and declare for the NFL Draft.
Strengths
Has some explosiveness to his game. He’s got some real burst/acceleration and his speed is evident on film. However, it’s not quite on the elite level due to not finishing some runs.
He has the ability to make people miss in the open field. Great juking/cutting ability.
Has very good change of direction ability and works great in short areas.
Although he didn’t have quite the passing game production, he has shown ability in that facet of the game. Looked really good running routes during the NFL Combine.
Weaknesses
Although has a couple of 30+ carry games under his belt, he is a smaller back which limits him being a workhorse back at the next level.
Has average vision. Can be hesitant to pounce on holes.
His contact balance isn’t the best due to small size. Can get stood up by linebackers and safeties.
Lack of strength makes him not a great runner between the tackles.
Has some very good pass pro reps, but he also has some very bad reps. Technique can be a lot better.
Overall
Tyjae Spears is a fun player to watch on tape. I love his open field ability and he has a lot of plays where he jukes players out of their socks. I want to see him featured more in the passing game where I think he can be a very nice asset for a team. Add in that he is a player with some real burst, he will stick in the NFL. I don’t think he’s a player who will be a workhorse back at the next level. He will need to get stronger in order to be a better player between the tackles.
I think Spears will be best in a committee backfield with a higher ceiling than most RB2s. I think with how his journey to the draft has gone so far, he will be a player that I think either goes in round 3 or round 4.
